Schools

Different schools draw different boards from the same instant. Every divergence between practitioners is a parameter here, with a declared default, present in the engine’s input type from the first release. A value the engine has not implemented is refused by name: it is never quietly replaced with the nearest value the engine does compute.

Every board is therefore laid by a school, including the one nobody chose. The school that was followed is stated under the board, on the picture, in the transcript and inside a prompt, and the default is stated like every other value. That is deliberate: a reader who moved nothing is the reader least likely to know a choice was made for them.

What a value named for a school claims

Not that the school is right — that this is what the school teaches, and that the engine transcribes it. Those are the two ways such a value can be wrong, the lineage misnamed or the table miscopied, and neither needs a second tradition to be caught. That is also why more is asked of a quantity this engine presents as the answer than of one it presents as somebody’s.

What must be on the shelf before one is declared

Four things: a witness that is the school’s own, or that states that school’s teaching and says so; the reading named as that school’s, in the same words the value carries; exactly what it moves, set against what the engine already computes; and a rung, which weighs the transcription and not the doctrine. A modern summary with no text behind it is none of those. Nor is the size of the disagreement one of them: a lineage that moves a single cell and keeps the rest still draws a different board, and two practitioners still hold opposite sides of it.

Whose a rule is, beside how well it is attested

The ladder of evidence orders one risk: that a rule handed down as the tradition’s is in fact one lineage’s own. Whose a rule is answers a different question, and it cannot be a rung without claiming a kind of check it does not have. So the register carries it in a column of its own, beside the rung and never inside it — and most rows show a dash there, which is a claim rather than a blank: the quantity is carried as the tradition’s own, not as one party’s reading of it.

A declared default is not a hidden school

Every divergence has a default and has to: an address naming no method still answers, and so does a bare section. What does not follow is that the default may be silent. Where the engine computes more than one value, the one in force is stated wherever the board is — under it on the page, under the grid on the drawing, under the pillars in the transcript, in the answer over the API — whether or not anybody moved it. The controls stay where a reader opens them on purpose; it is the reading that must never be able to pass for schoolless.

A school is axes, never a bundle

A school usually touches more than one of these axes at once, and the convenient shape would be a single name that sets all the rest. The engine refuses it: a bundle is a table, a table can be edited, and a board carrying the bundle’s name rather than the values it stood for would reproduce differently the day the table changed, with nothing in its own output to say so. A form may offer the shortcut and fill the fields with it — what leaves the form is still the fields, and a reader can see what was set and move any one of them.

How many there are is a state, not a design

Nothing here is written as though a board had one method. What adding a school costs is a value in the engine’s declaration, a gloss in every language, a row in the register and an argument to stand behind it — and no control, since what a form offers is read off the declaration. A school that would need a paragraph written by hand is a school whose declaration is missing a field, and the fix belongs upstream of this page.
